Multicultural Club

Project Theme: English Language Learner (ELL) Inclusion and Support

Target Audience and Location: High school students at Inlet Grove High School in Riviera Beach, Florida.

Mission: Supporting ELL students by increasing communication, sense of safety and celebration of cultures and languages.

Project Description: Scholar Gabriel Gerig and educator Scholar Francisco Lopez Ortiz are building a more inclusive community with their project, the Multicultural Club. They created this club to celebrate the diverse cultures and languages in the ELL community at their high school.

Both Scholars were motivated by their experiences as immigrants and ELL students. Gabriel reflects that the determination he used to learn a different language propelled him to help other students learn English and excel in school. Through weekly club meetings focused on academic and social-emotional support and engagement with volunteer tutors, students will cover topics such as exploring and dismantling stereotypes, English practice sessions, and promoting acceptance, inclusion and solidarity. When asked what he is proud of, Gabriel shares, “I am most proud of the transition I’ve made from identifying as an ELL student to helping other ELL students in just four years.”
